STORServer Enterprise Backup Appliance 3100 featured in DCIG Special Report

Analyst firm outlines five characteristics that set EBA3100 apart from the competition

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 4, 2012) – Earlier this year, STORServer, Inc.®, the leading provider of proven data backup solutions for the mid-market, announced that its Enterprise Backup Appliance 3100 earned scores so much higher than the competition in the DCIG 2012 Backup Appliance Buyer’s Guide that an entirely new ranking was introduced for the first time: the “Enterprise” ranking.

In the newly released DCIG 2012 Backup Appliance Special Report, the analyst firm focuses on the emergence of the STORServer EBA3100, the largest model in the STORServer appliance line offering up to 1 petabyte of data storage. According to the Special Report, the five characteristics of the STORServer EBA3100 that make it “Enterprise” class include:

  • IBM hardware and software. Whether enterprises publicly admit it or not, the name on the box matters to them as it gives a sense of assurance they are getting a proven and reliable solution. While STORServer may not be a household name, IBM certainly is. Knowing that the STORServer EBA3100 is based on IBM hardware and software and supported by IBM gives enterprises the added degree of confidence that many need to justify moving forward with the EBA3100.
  • Hardware availability and scalability. Dual Active-Active controllers, 100 terabytes of raw storage capacity and up to 300 gigabytes of solid state storage (SSD) all equate to a highly available, performing and scalable backup appliance that is needed to handle enterprise backup workloads. The SSD capability has been increased to 3.6 terabytes in the recently updated EBA3200 model.
  • Data reduction techniques. Nearly every backup appliance offers deduplication in some form. In the case of the EBA3100, deduplication is only where it starts doing data reduction, not where it ends. All STORServer EBA models provide built-in deduplication, but the daily transfer rates of the EBA3100 at up to 10 terabytes per day are unprecedented. The appliance offers multiple forms of deduplication that deduplicate data at a very granular level coupled with compression, integration with VMware’s VADP and incremental forever backups. Together, these combine to assure enterprises that their data is stored in the most efficient way possible.
  • Advanced, scalable data management capabilities. Big Data and compliance requirements are the new reality in enterprises today. Included in the STORServer EBA3100 is IBM Tivoli Storage Manager. Using TSM, enterprises can set data retention policies down to the file level and manage up to 8 billion objects or about 2 petabytes of data.
  • Simplicity. The EBA3100 ships with a lot of functionality, which can also mean complexity. To make it simple to use, the appliance ships with its own management interface. Enterprises can quickly and easily get started with performing and managing backups with the knowledge that if they need these other features they are available to be used on the EBA3100.

“The STORServer EBA3100 includes the breadth of features that enterprises need to confidently protect the large and varied amounts of data in their environment while still retaining the simplicity of deployment and ease of ongoing management that are the hallmarks of today’s backup appliances,” said Jerome Wendt, president and lead analyst for DCIG.

The EBA3100 particularly shined in the areas of deduplication, general management, hardware (both its availability and scalability) and virtualization support.

Built on TSM, STORServer offers a complete suite of enterprise backup appliances, plus software and services that solve today’s backup, archive and disaster recovery challenges. For more information on the company’s line of data backup solutions, visit https://storserver.com.
