Spartanburg County Schools

Spartanburg School District #2 chooses a STORServer Enterprise Backup Appliance for its “ease of use” and time saving features.

Spartanburg School District #2 is a medium-sized school district of 14 schools located in Boiling Springs South Carolina, approximately 240 miles from the Atlantic coast. The IT environment requires the backup of servers at all 14 remote schools as well as the data center servers handling all aspects of district business (finance, transportation, administration, human resources, maintenance, etc.). The center requires about 25GB of data be backed up nightly. The data exists in the form of SQL databases, Oracle databases, text files, images, and video. Spartanburg’s inland location usually protects it from being hit directly from Atlantic hurricanes, though it often receives heavy rains due to passing tropical systems. They also face the same disaster scenarios that most centers face in terms of the potential for fire or inadvertently-deleted or corrupted data.

Dayton Children’s Hospital

Dayton Children’s Hospital Enjoys Pain-free Data Protection for 9 Years with STORServer Backup Appliances

The mission of Dayton Children’s Hospital in Ohio is to improve the health of all children through service, education, research and advocacy. One of the largest pediatric healthcare providers in the Miami Valley region, it has 155 beds with 250 physicians and 600 nurses who treat 290,000 children each year. It’s quickly gaining a national reputation with the Magnet® designation for excellence in nursing care, which only seven percent of health care organizations in the world attain. Using cutting edge technology to deliver better services is a core part of its vision to be the first choice for children’s health as an independent, locally-governed children’s hospital.

Housing Works

The Challenge:

Ankur Patel, IT director for Housing Works, received a luncheon invitation from an Authorized STORServer Reseller to discuss backup and recovery solutions. The timing couldn’t have been better. The organization had been using Symantec Backup Exec software to backup data to a tape library, when it found that it couldn’t recover data from one of its tapes. “We had a small electrical fire in our office that damaged a file server,” recalls Patel. “Our tape backup failed and we had to re-input all the data. It took three IT people more than two weeks, which delayed other projects. We wanted a new approach that would deliver better business continuity and that could relieve us of the manual backup processes we had.

Large Regional Transit Agency

When a mass transit agency for a large metropolitan area needed to streamline its data backup, it turned to STORServer to implement a simplified yet effective solution.

This innovative agency decided to take advantage of the newest IBM® Spectrum Protect™ features, and soon realized a search for a new backup solution needed to take place. Its existing mainframe was unable to handle the resource requirements for the newer version of IBM Spectrum Protect, thus necessitating a refresh of its existing data backup solution.

Metro City Government

After six years of continuous top-notch performance from its previous STORServer data backup system, the city decided to upgrade its current configuration in preparation for its evolving data backup needs and a necessary increase in raw storage capacity. Certain vendors used by the park department store pictures of their completed work on the city’s server, which inflates the overall storage footprint the city backs up daily.

In addition, all the city’s new projects are stored on virtualized servers, which increases its storage footprint and requires additional storage capacity. Under this new configuration, additional shelves of storage can easily be added to allow for future IT projects, such as mobile-based applications. STORServer’s total appliance solution scales with ease as the city’s data grows and is simple to upgrade and install with backups beginning on the first day.
